The Lion’s Mound

A must-see attraction is the Lion’s Mound, an artificial hill dominated by Van Geel’s cast iron lion. The Lion of Waterloo is one of the most famous monuments in Belgium. It was erected between 1823 and 1826 to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo. You can see the lion at close quarters if you’re brave enough to climb the 226 steps that take you there.

The round building at the foot of the mound depicts a key moment in the Battle of Waterloo on a huge fresco painted by Louis Dumoulin.
